On Tuesday, January 28, 2003 the State of the Union Address delivered by pResident Bush was viewed on a large screen TV by an overflow crowd at All Saints Church, Pasadena. Hosted by the Progressive Religious Partnership, ICUJP and All Saints, more than 500 concerned people chose to come out and join in a public discussion and critique of the speech and its messages. A panel of distinguished leaders in Faith, Medicine, Education, Law and Entertainment gave impromptu comments, from which the (loose) quotes below are derived. Mark Creek-Water is an ICUJP friend with a good ear and a busy pen. He sends us these words:

DEAR FRIENDs--- I was with some good folks at All Saints Church in Pasadena Tuesday nite for the president's TV-speech. Here are some of the comments which came out during the question+answer time after the speech:

Jeremiah The Prophet pointed out---more than 2000 years ago---that we can be "safe" only if we challenge the injustices which occur in our own society...
- Dr. Tamara Eskenazi

Abraham Lincoln say'd: "the issue is not whether god is on our side, but whether we are on god's side"

"War is not an option any more for the coming generations"

pRes.Bush's call to God to bless his war effort is an example of the arrogance which has made USA fear'd + hated

"I am convinced that a nation that lives out of its fears can never fulfill its promise"
- Rev. Tim McDonald

"Safety comes only thru peace + social-justice"

"We need to stay focus'd on the over-all issue ... Peace"

"There are always those who want to return to the caves: we can not --- we will not allow them to deter us from reach-ing for the stars"
- Mike Farrell

"Fear always leads to violence + lies ... Love always leads to peace + truth"
