"Power, properly understood, is the ability to achieve purpose. It is the strength required to bring about social, political, or economic changes. In this sense power is not only desirable but necessary in order to implement the demands of love and justice. One of the greatest problems of history is that the concepts of love and power are usually contrasted as polar opposites. Love is identified with a resignation of power and power with a denial of love. It was this interpretation that caused Nietzsche, the philosopher of the "will to power" to reject the Christian concept of love
. What is needed is a realization that power without love is reckless and abusive and that love without power is sentimental and anemic. Power at its best is love implementing the demands of justice. Justice at its best is love correcting everything that stands against love."
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Justice Pilgrimage
On Tuesday January 27 Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE) will lead an Interfaith Pilgrimage up the California coast to visit Vons/Safeway CEO Steven A. Burd in Alamo, California.
Steven A. Burd is a devout Christian and a major advocate of Animal Rights. CLUE will be bringing workers, their children and their pets, along with over 10,000 postcards and denominational resolutions or statements of support, to call on Mr. Burd to live by his faith by caring about his workers and their families as much as he cares about their animals.
We will return on the evening of Wednesday January 28. Transportation, food and lodging will be provided.
If you would like to come along, please contact us as soon as possible at:

Commute the Death Sentence of Kevin Cooper
At one minute past midnight on February 10, 2004 the State of California plans to execute Kevin Cooper.
We Believe That Significant Post-Trial Developments Must Be Explored Before California Executes An Innocent Man
On the night of June 4, 1983, three members of the Ryen family and a houseguest were murdered in San Bernardino County. The only surviving eyewitness says three White or Hispanic men carried out the murders. There are serious allegations of evidence tampering. Police records show evidence was destroyed. DNA tests may have been altered.
Despite what has been described as overwhelming evidence against Kevin Cooper, numerous facts that were not presented at trial or were discovered subsequent to trial strongly support Mr. Coopers innocence. Those taken in conjunction with questionable facts, motive, and testimony presented at trial together show that execution is not appropriate.
For highlights of issues that raise serious questions about Mr. Coopers guilt and about our criminal justice system if Mr. Cooper is executed for a crime he did not commit, please download a .pdf by the California People of Faith Working Against the Death Penalty on the facts about the Cooper case.
