"We have ancient habits to deal with, vast structures of power, indescribably complicated problems to solve. But unless we abdicate our humanity altogether and succumb to fear and impotence in the presence of the weapons we have ourselves created, it is as possible and as urgent to put an end to war and violence between nations as it is to put an end to poverty and racial injustice."
Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

"U.S. military forces themselves, including nuclear forces will now be used to "dissuade adversaries from undertaking military programs or operations that could threaten U.S. interests or those of allies and friends.""

Hearing Sought on Charities
MPAC Petition for Hearing in Senate Committee
Regarding the Status of American Muslim
Non-Profit Organizations
Senator Chuck Grassley, chairman of the Committee on Finance, and Senator Max Baucus, ranking member, have requested protected information about American Muslim tax-exempt organizations in connection with a committee investigation into terrorism financing. Their December 22 letter to the IRS states that while much attention has been paid to where their money ends up, the source of their funds is equally important. The letter goes on to request the names on the donor lists of 25 Muslim charities.
MPAC is concerned that three of the targeted charities have already been closed by the government and had their funds seized, leading Muslims to question the political motives behind further violating the privacy rights of donors.
In response to this event, MPAC asks you to sign their petition requesting a hearing in the Senate Finance Committee regarding this issue.

A benefit concert to raise money for the Union of Palestinian Medical Relief Communities (UPMRC) and for International Solidarity Movement activist Brian Avery's medical expenses.
UPMRC is a grassroots, community-based Palestinian health organization. UPMRC was founded in 1979 by a group of Palestinian doctors and health professionals seeking to supplement the decayed and inadequate health infrastructure caused by years of Israeli military occupation. It is non-profit, voluntary, and one of the largest health NGOs in Palestine. UPMRC's national health programs emphasize prevention, education, community participation, and the empowerment of people.
Brian Avery is a 25 year old nonviolent activist who was volunteering with the International Solidarity Movement in Jenin, when, on April 5th, 2003, he went outside with a friend to see whether anyone needed help during an evening curfew. An Israeli military vehicle approached, and as he held his hands in the air, a machine gun fired at his face. His medical expenses are now in the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

The scheduled execution of Kevin Cooper on February 10th can only stop if we get active speaking and acting on behalf of justice and the God of Love and Compassion. Please attend the Call to Conscience at 10 am at St. Monica's Catholic Church in Santa Monica. St. Monica's is Gov. Schwarzenegger's home parish and we will be making a personal appeal to conscience and faith on that day.
Join Religious Leaders from all over Los Angeles to call on the Governor to grant clemency to Kevin Cooper. No one has the right to kill, not even the state. Further, this case highlights many problems with capital cases that show the system is flawed. Therefore, we also call for a time-out on executions now.
Invited Speakers: Rev. Jim Lawson, Bishop Gabino Zavala, Bishop John Bruno, Bishop Henry Williamson, Sr. Suzanne Jabro, Rabbi Neil Comess-Daniels, Rev. Jim Covington, Rev. Ed Bacon, Rev. Louis Chase, Rev. George Regas, Rabbi Leonard Beerman and others
Please see the website of California People of Faith Working Against the Death Penalty For an overview of the case, downloadable handouts, flyers, sample letters, sample church bulletins and information on how to get involved.
