"As a result of the war, corporations have been enthroned and an era of corruption in high places will follow, and the money power of the country will endeavor to prolong its reign by working upon the prejudices of the people until all wealth is aggregated in a few hands and the Republic is destroyed."
U.S. President Abraham Lincoln

Oppose the CLEAR Act - H.R. 2671
Congress is considering the
Clear Law Enforcement for Criminal Alien Removal Act
This bill requires state and local police to enforce federal, civil immigration laws. Under CLEAR, local police would be responsible for, among other new duties: investigating immigrant students who have dropped from full-time to part-time status; investigating individuals who have remained in the U.S. longer than the date on their tourist visa allows, or businesses that have hired immigrants without legal papers.
Experience shows that when immigrants begin to see local police as agents of the federal government, with the power to deport them or their family members, they are less likely to approach local law enforcement with tips on crimes or suspicious activity. Criminals benefit from this situation simply because their victims are afraid to speak up and report the crimes. Domestic violence, gang intimidation and drug activity will likely all increase if this bill passes.
We urge you to remind Congress that using local police to enforce federal immigration laws conflicts with their primary mission of fighting crime in our communities.
Take Action:
Write to Congress FCNL/CapWiz
Members of Congress are already lining up in support of the bill. The bills proponents are encouraging more support by mis-representing what the bill actually does, and ignoring the adverse effect it would have on public safety.
Please contact your representative today and tell her/him how you feel about this bill. Letters to Judiciary Chair James Sensenbrenner (R-WI), Appropriations Committee Chair Bill Young (R-FL), Speaker Dennis Hastert (R-IL), Majority Leader Tom DeLay (R-TX), and Majority Whip Roy Blunt (R-MO) would also be helpful.

The Week of Walking Prayer
From November 17th to 24th, we are asking clergy and congregations all over the county to participate in the week of walking prayer.
Participation is simple:
1) Decide on one Vons or Albertsons where you would be willing to pray and walk with the strikers/locked out workers for 30 minutes, any day or time this week. If your congregation or group wants to help, pick a store and decide to bring food one evening that week to the workers. LET US KNOW WHERE AND WHEN you will be walking and/or bringing food so thatwe can let the picket captains know and so that we can let the media know.
Send a note to Nicole at and/or leave her a message at 213-239-6770.
2) Attend the kick off Vigil at 2:30 pm on Monday the 17th at the Von's on 3rd and Vermont. If you will be attending, let us know so that we can give you a role in the Vigil. This bill requires state and local police to enforce federal, civil immigration laws.

If You Cannot Join the Picket Lines
Voice Your Opinion to the Store Owners
Today. Right now.
Let them know that you will not cross a picket line no matter how many coupons they sent to your home offering free food and discounts. Let them know that if they try to break the union that you will NEVER shop at their stores again.
We are lucky to have a number of choices for places to shop including local farmers markets, Jons, Trader Joes, Food 4 Less - Why buy food that must taste like blood?
See http://www.saveourhealthcare.org/altshop.html for a list of unionized stores that are not on strike.
A single letter is worth fifty opinions or so they say. If youd like your opinion to matter please go to the web pages listed below and voice it.
Let the store owners know that you support the workers who make the store what it is a nice place to buy your food.

Military Families Speak Out
This controversial and arresting film takes you behind the walls of government, as CIA, Pentagon and foreign service experts speak out, many for the first time, detailing the lies, misstatements and exaggerations that served as the reasons to fight a "preemptive" war that wasn't necessary. This documentary offers an in-depth look at the unsettling distortion of intelligence presented to the American people, the Congress and the press. Fighting wars to bring about regime change is in breach of international law. Yet, throughout the fall of 2002, and into the weeks preceding the war in Iraq, the Bush administration systematically distorted intelligence evidence and misled the public in order to turn opinion favor of "regime change" in Iraq.
