Oppose Politicizing Houses of Worship
No to H.R. 235

Join us in opposition to the "Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act" H.R. 235" which if passed would do serious damage to the separation of Church and State to the detriment of both.

- Current law upholds the integrity of houses of worship
- This bill is unwanted and unneeded by America's clergy
- The bill is predicated on false assumptions about existing law

Re: Oppose Politicizing Houses of Worship

Dear Representative:
As your constituent, I urge you to oppose the Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act (H.R. 235). This bill would wreak havoc on religious integrity and the political process.

Existing tax law stops churches and other tax-exempt entities from using their personnel and money to intervene in partisan political campaigns. In the process, the integrity of religious institutions is protected by keeping them focused on the principal goals of nearly every house of worship: sharing their moral and theological views and ministering to believers.

Federal tax law serves our nation’s religious community well, preventing houses of worship from being drawn into partisan politicking. Again, I urge you to oppose the Houses of Worship Free Speech Restoration Act, H.R. 235. This is an important issue and one that I will be following.

Sincerely,

General Boykin Should Resign

Press reports have brought General Boykin's unfortunate remarks to public attention. ICUJP finds these remarks to be abhorrent and inappropriate statements, particularly coming from an official of the United States military. ICUJP asks you to join us in asking for General Boykin's resignation.

Write to Senators John Warner and Carl Levin of the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Services. To write to theses Senators, click on their names above. Copy and paste the sample letter below or write your own.

Re: General Boykin Should Resign

Dear Senator,
I am writing to express my concern about the comments made by General William Boykin in regards to Christianity, the United States and the war on terror. As an American and a concerned citizen I take great offense to the kind of intolerant and extremist perspective provided by General Boykin.

I believe in social justice and peace, not religious extremism. It is neither Christian nor American to equate the American nation and Christianity. Moreover, the Bill of Rights expressly forbids such an equation.

I support your efforts to encourage a thorough review of Gen. Boykin's behavior. Yet even President Bush has said that the General's opinion "doesn't reflect what the government thinks." I believe more serious action is warranted - Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld should ask the General to resign his position.

I urge you to communicate with Secretary Rumsfeld, and ask him to remove Gen. Boykin from his position in the Pentagon.

Sincerely,
