As people who live, work and/or worship in the Pasadena area, we know that a war with Iraq will have devastating consequences not only for combatants and civilians in Iraq, but also here at home. At a time when our state and local governments are in financial crises, the Congressional Budget Office estimates a military action against Iraq will cost the taxpayers of the nation between $9 billion and $13 billion a month, likely resulting in further cuts in federally funded programs that benefit our city, such as health care, education, housing, and transportation. Further, this war puts our families and communities at risk because it increases anti-American sentiment abroad and decreases funding for homeland security needs here in California. It will make more difficult the international cooperation essential to combat terrorism. We support and appreciate the U.S. military serving at home and abroad against global and local terrorism. Our support for the men and women of the Armed Services prevents us from supporting policies where many of them will be unjustly sacrificed. The United States should set an example for the world by following the rules and regulations of international law. A foreign policy based on international cooperation where war is waged only as a last resort serves the interests of our nation. We, the residents and community leaders of the Pasadena area, are opposed to a preemptive attack on Iraq and a reckless, counterproductive foreign policy. We call on our federal representatives, Congressman Adam Schiff, Senator Dianne Feinstein, and Senator Barbara Boxer to support continued weapons inspections and surveillance in Iraq and show leadership towards a new foreign policy that draws on our nationšs core democratic values to make our country, and the world, a safer and more just place. This foreign policy must be rooted in a commitment to human rights, true democracy, and international cooperation. By signing this statement I hereby grant permission for the use of my name in newspaper advertising.
