of Justice and Peace

Stand with LA Security Officers for Decent Pay and Benefits

Throughout his life, which ended on April 4, 1968, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., brought a prophetic critique to bear on the intertwined evils of militarism, racism, and poverty. Today these same intertwined evils continue to deprive people around the world of peace, freedom, and fullness of life.

On this April 4 here in Los Angeles, people of faith will bear witness in the spirit of King by standing with thousands of private security guards – 65% of whom are African-American men – in their struggle for dignity and a family living wage. This event will also highlight how the war system and U.S. military services feed off the despair of low-wage workers, many of whom are left without options other than military service.

These workers want union representation, and their direct employers&Mac247;the private security companies – also recognize that union representation is the best way to retain fully qualified security officers. But the big building owners – Maguire, Zinman, and Thomas, among others – need to provide assurance that they will continue to use unionized suppliers of private security services.
