Two peace marches, each with an individual message tied in to the overall theme of the connection between domestic violence and international violence, will converge in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles for a major rally!
"9/11", a date that has historically brought many examples of devastation to various parts of our world, can now be transformed from a day of tragedy into an opportunity to heal past wounds, and to instigate a fundamental change in our society's approach to ending violence. This event will respectfully grieve the tragedies of the past, but simultaneously celebrate the seeds that are taking root to grow a peaceful future.
Our participants include a wide range of individuals who have overcome the worst struggles of society, and have not only managed to thrive, but now have the strength to pass on their legacies of endurance.
This group includes war veterans, war refugees, laborers, clergy and children, ex-gang members and many other traditional and "non traditional" leaders.
The term "non-traditional" highlights leadership that is indigenous to a community or culture, and comes from a place of integrity, commitment, trust, and service to others to effect positive social change.
These individuals are not considered mainstream leaders and their leadership competency is not determined by educational degrees, their wealth, or political favors. "Non-traditional Leaders" are determined to correct traditional misperceptions and convince "traditional" leaders that violence will not change the tragedies that have occurred locally, nationally and globally.
Please join us if you can!

DREAM Fast Vigil!

The Los Angeles DREAM Team Coalition will hold a DREAM Fast Vigil to stress the urgency and need for accountability around the strong bi-partisan student legalization legislations known as the DREAM Act and the Student Adjustment Act.
Students, educators, and their friends have held countless actions including call-in days, legislative visits, rallies, marches, sign on letters, petition drives, and national mobilization efforts, yet the DREAM Act has not seen significant movement in Congress since it passed the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 16-3 vote in October 2003.
Congress will return to Washington DC in early September to close the session. In order to communicate our seriousness to our elected representatives and to increase public attention, we have launched the 2-week DREAM Fast Vigil, the most dramatic, non-violent grassroots DREAM Act effort to date!
This action is coordinated on the national level by the United We DREAM Campaign and the New American Opportunity Campaign.

Fair Immigration Reform Movement
What is The Week of Action?
Across the country immigrant rights organizations, unions, churches, and student groups have committed to make September 20th- September 26th a week of action for comprehensive immigration reform. There will also be a lobby day in Washington D.C. on September 21st. The past year was filled with promises by different elected officials and the administration of immigration reform.
Yet as we approach the end of the congressional session the promises have not materialized into concrete gains for the immigrant community. The Dream Act and AGJobs have not moved or, in the case of AGJobs, have been purposely stalled. Therefore we need to keep up the pressure and hold our officials accountable to hardworking immigrants across the country. We hope that the Week of Action will give it more visibility and allow you to tell communities and the general public that your action is part of a nationwide movement.
What can we do in Los Angeles and in other regions throughout Southern California?
Already the Los Angeles DREAM Team Coalition has decided to hold a two-week (September 13th- September 25th) fast vigil to bring attention to the issues faced by immigrant youth and the DREAM Act that could provide relief for up to 65,000 undocumented immigrant youth annually. (see listing above for more information on how to support the Fast)
Why This Week in September?
It is the one-year anniversary of the Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride and it is just before Congress recesses, giving us a chance to press hard and push AgJOBS and DREAM Act over the finish line and into law! Also, it is about 6 weeks before the election, an election in which our communities and issues could prove decisive.
What Issues are the Focus of the Week of Action?
The Week of Action can highlight the range of issues immigrant advocates are working on around the country, but its common theme are three short-term legislative priorities and two longer-term priorities of great significance to immigration advocates. The short-term agenda we are promoting is the passage of AgJOBS and the DREAM Act, and stopping the CLEAR Act.
The longer-term agenda is the passage of the Civil Liberties Restoration Act (CLRA) and the Safe, Orderly, Legal Visas and Enforcement (SOLVE) Act. Again, other issues you are working on can be folded into your events as part of the Week of Action.
