Información en español

Two peace marches, each with an individual message tied in to the overall theme of the connection between domestic violence and international violence, will converge in MacArthur Park in Los Angeles for a major rally!

"9/11", a date that has historically brought many examples of devastation to various parts of our world, can now be transformed from a day of tragedy into an opportunity to heal past wounds, and to instigate a fundamental change in our society's approach to ending violence. This event will respectfully grieve the tragedies of the past, but simultaneously celebrate the seeds that are taking root to grow a peaceful future.

Our participants include a wide range of individuals who have overcome the worst struggles of society, and have not only managed to thrive, but now have the strength to pass on their legacies of endurance.

This group includes war veterans, war refugees, laborers, clergy and children, ex-gang members and many other traditional and "non traditional" leaders.

The term "non-traditional" highlights leadership that is indigenous to a community or culture, and comes from a place of integrity, commitment, trust, and service to others to effect positive social change.

These individuals are not considered mainstream leaders and their leadership competency is not determined by educational degrees, their wealth, or political favors. "Non-traditional Leaders" are determined to correct traditional misperceptions and convince "traditional" leaders that violence will not change the tragedies that have occurred locally, nationally and globally.

Please join us if you can!

DREAM Fast Vigil!

The Los Angeles DREAM Team Coalition will hold a DREAM Fast Vigil to stress the urgency and need for accountability around the strong bi-partisan student legalization legislations known as the DREAM Act and the Student Adjustment Act.

Students, educators, and their friends have held countless actions including call-in days, legislative visits, rallies, marches, sign on letters, petition drives, and national mobilization efforts, yet the DREAM Act has not seen significant movement in Congress since it passed the Senate Judiciary Committee by a 16-3 vote in October 2003.

Congress will return to Washington DC in early September to close the session. In order to communicate our seriousness to our elected representatives and to increase public attention, we have launched the 2-week DREAM Fast Vigil, the most dramatic, non-violent grassroots DREAM Act effort to date!

This action is coordinated on the national level by the United We DREAM Campaign and the New American Opportunity Campaign.

Fair Immigration Reform Movement

What is The Week of Action?

Across the country immigrant rights organizations, unions, churches, and student groups have committed to make September 20th- September 26th a week of action for comprehensive immigration reform. There will also be a lobby day in Washington D.C. on September 21st. The past year was filled with promises by different elected officials and the administration of immigration reform.

Yet as we approach the end of the congressional session the promises have not materialized into concrete gains for the immigrant community. The Dream Act and AGJobs have not moved or, in the case of AGJobs, have been purposely stalled. Therefore we need to keep up the pressure and hold our officials accountable to hardworking immigrants across the country. We hope that the Week of Action will give it more visibility and allow you to tell communities and the general public that your action is part of a nationwide movement.

What can we do in Los Angeles and in other regions throughout Southern California?

Already the Los Angeles DREAM Team Coalition has decided to hold a two-week (September 13th- September 25th) fast vigil to bring attention to the issues faced by immigrant youth and the DREAM Act that could provide relief for up to 65,000 undocumented immigrant youth annually. (see listing above for more information on how to support the Fast)

Why This Week in September?

It is the one-year anniversary of the Immigrant Worker Freedom Ride and it is just before Congress recesses, giving us a chance to press hard and push AgJOBS and DREAM Act over the finish line and into law! Also, it is about 6 weeks before the election, an election in which our communities and issues could prove decisive.

What Issues are the Focus of the Week of Action?

The Week of Action can highlight the range of issues immigrant advocates are working on around the country, but its common theme are three short-term legislative priorities and two longer-term priorities of great significance to immigration advocates. The short-term agenda we are promoting is the passage of AgJOBS and the DREAM Act, and stopping the CLEAR Act.

The longer-term agenda is the passage of the Civil Liberties Restoration Act (CLRA) and the Safe, Orderly, Legal Visas and Enforcement (SOLVE) Act. Again, other issues you are working on can be folded into your events as part of the Week of Action.

Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR) Obtains Internal Pentagon Report Outlining Framework for Use of Torture

Pentagon Report March 2003 (PDF) 6.7MB

CCR has posted the controversial Pentagon Working Group Report on Detainee Interrogations in the Global War on Terrorism: Assessment of Legal, Historical, Policy and Operational Considerations on its website. The report is further proof of the Bush administration's disregard for the Constitution and civil liberties and shows there was planning at high levels of government to abuse and torture detainees.

CCR President Michael Ratner stated, "This memo and others show there was planning far up the chain of command to torture detainess; the atrocities at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere cannot be swept under the rug by going after low-level soldiers. Apparently highly placed U.S. officials were willing to approve interrogation methods that violate every convention on torture the United States has ever signed. But they needed to find cover for their actions and a defense to possible criminal prosecution. Government lawyers writing this report wildly distorted the law in an effort to exempt officials from potential criminal prosecution."

Economic Justice is the Foundation of Peace:
Corruption Characterizes the US Occupation of Iraq

"The disaster that is the occupation of Iraq is much more than the war that plays nightly across U.S. television screens. The violence of grinding poverty, exacerbated by economic sanctions after the first Gulf War, has been deepened by the US invasion. Every day the economic policies of the occupying authorities create more hunger among Iraq 's working people, transforming them into a pool of low-wage, semi-employed labor, desperate for jobs at almost any price."

– David Bacon

Bechtel, along with Halliburton,
recieves billions to implement US control over Iraq's resources.

Their efforts to privatize water in many countries was, in Bolivia, defeated by a grassroots rebellion.

Women, hardest hit by their policies, are central to the fight against Bechtel, starting with grandmothers from Big Mountain who fought displacement.

Bechtel oversees the nuclear dumpsite at Yucca Mountain

Former Secretary of State George Shultz is currently on the board of the Bechtel Corporation. Shultz is one of California Gov. Schwartzeneger's economic advisors.

Last April, the Bush administration gave Bechtel the first big Iraqi reconstruction contract, a prized $680 million deal over 18 months.

As the resistance to US occupation increases daily, Bechtel, the second largest recipient of money to 'rebuild' Iraq, continues to implement US control of Iraq's resources. Bechtel is the world's largest contractor, profiteering from war, human suffering and destruction of the environment. Bechtel made cluster bombs and other weapons of mass destruction, has built nearly half of the world's nuclear power plants and has invaded Shoshone land to oversee the nuclear dumpsite at Yucca Mountain.

Bechtel has a history with Peabody Coal which led to the displacement of Navaho people from Big Mountain. They have tried to privatize water in many countries; in Soweto South Africa women and men are resisting and in Bolivia Bechtel's efforts were defeated by a grassroots rebellion led by women. Women, who are hit hardest by Bechtel's genocidal policies, are holding Bechtel accountable for its crimes.
